Wilbur & Orville Wright 1899 Telegram Signed
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Scarce telegram signed by both Wilbur and Orville Wright, dated 1899, the same year that the brothers wrote the Smithsonian for information on aeronautics, and built the ''Wright Kite'' which was the basis for the glider that they flew at Kitty Hawk in 1900. Telegram dated 17 October 1899 from Washington D.C. is addressed to a Mitchell & Smith in Charleston, South Carolina, then a law firm specializing in real estate in the Carolina low country. Telegram reads in full, ''Arrived Charleston Sunday morning leave for Macon Sunday night / important I have full conference with you early Sunday. Please send letter Charleston Hotel Stating hour and place can meet prefer your office, Wright Brothers'' underneath which they clearly sign ''Orville Wright'' and ''Wilbur Wright''. Telegram has printed information at top from ''The Western Union Telegraph Company''. This fascinating telegram implies that the Wright brothers were actively searching for the appropriate place -- already narrowed down to the southeast -- in which to test their glider. It fills in several gaps of knowledge regarding their activity in the crucial year of 1899, placing them in Washington DC in October, which they probably visited to research aeronautics as well as weather in various parts of the country. Telegram is in very good condition with isolated notations and light creasing. A fantastic, early piece of aviation history, signed at the very moment the Wright Brothers took action to make their dream of human flight a reality.
