A) Matched pair of 19th Century percussion target pistols made by Gosset of Paris. The pistols have browned, Damascus-finished barrels with casehardened hammers, locks, trigger guards and buttcaps. The stocks are oil finished European walnut. The pistols have octagon rifled barrels with dovetailed front sights. Target rear sights are integral with the receiver. The wedge-fastened walnut half-stocks have relief carved forends and flats, flared butts with relief-carved edges and fine, borderless checkering on the grips. "GOSSET/A PARIS" is inlaid in silver on the top and right barrel flats; "FNI PAR" is inlaid in silver on the left barrel flat. "Gosset A. Paris" is engraved on the sides of the lock plates in front of the hammer. The receiver, chamber and barrel of each pistol is numbered "1' and "2" respectively. The side plates, trigger guards, hammers, receiver tangs and buttcaps of each pistol are decorated with fine Boutet quality engraving. The side plates are shaped and engraved in the form of two detailed swans. A heron is engraved on an oval panel on the bottom of each trigger guard. The trigger guards have vine shaped finials with delicate Boutet quality engraving. The hammer, receiver tang and buttcap are engraved with detailed floral designs.

A) Very fine. Some scattered and very minor pitting is visible on the barrel flats and the silver-inlaid maker's name and address are crisp The case colors on the hammer and lock plate are vivid. The case colors on the receiver tang, buttcap and trigger guard have faded to a dove-gray patina. The delicate engraving on the trigger guards, side plates and other components remains crisp. The stock has not been altered and remains in fine condition with sharp edges, relief carving and checkering.
