This original hand-painted cel and background are from the Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob Squarepants. The story takes place under the deep blue sea in Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob resides. SpongeBob, who is a yellow, porous sponge, is your typical happy-go-lucky character, as he is always cheerful and enjoys making people laugh. Patrick Star, SpongeBob's neighbor who is a starfish, boasts knowing nothing and is often getting himself into ridiculous situations. Between the homes of these two lies the home of the miserable Squidward, a squid, who is known for being grouchy and playing tricks on SpongeBob and Patrick. Both SpongeBob and Squidward work at the Krusty Krab, a fast food business run by the greedy money-loving Mr. Krabs, a crab, the arch rival of the evil, possibly misunderstood, Plankton. Another neighbor, Sandy Cheeks, an athletic squirrel who normally wears an astronaut's space suit, was introduced in "Tea at the Treedome." She spends most of her time inventing and experimenting. * This is a background landscape of a sandy Bikini Bottom, with 3 colorful coral pieces in the foreground. * * Overall Size of Background: 10 1/2" x 22" Overall size of cel: 10 1/2" x 20 1/2"Very good condition; has been stored rolled, so it will need to be flattened out for framingOriginal Production Backgrounds are used in the making of the final version of animated productions. The background establishes the location and the overall good mood of the scene. Typically, a background layout artist creates a drawing to establish the content of the scene, placement of characters, perspective and camera angle. Based on this drawing, the background artist creates a preliminary painting to confirm all of the scenes details, then the final production background which is used in the filming of the scene. When these backgrounds are individually photographed behind the progression of production cels, and projected at a rapid succession, the images in the foreground appear to move, creating an animated scene. * The corals are on the cel acetate, and the rest is painted on the paper background. The bottom of the sheets have peg holes, and the animator's notations. *
