Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1 CGC VG/FN 5.0
Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1 (First Funnies, Inc., 1939) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Slightly brittle pages. Here's one of the nine copies known to exist of this controversial and desirable item! The existence of this wasn't discovered until the early seventies, and thereafter it quickly became one of the most prized comics of all -- in Overstreet's Comic Book Price Guide #8, it was ranked as the third most-valuable comic, behind only Marvel #1 and Action #1. The reason this caused such a sensation is because collectors were forced to realize that the Sub-Mariner story here pre-dates the identical one in Marvel Comics #1, making this the character's first printed appearance. This comic was never released to newsstands -- it was created as a promotional giveaway to be distributed weekly at movie theatres (as demonstrated by the back-cover ad which elaborates on the concept). It didn't catch on, and no second issue was printed. Instead, the "Funnies Inc." studio that produced this book simply re-used Bill Everett's Sub-Mariner story for Marvel Comics #1, the studio produced it in its entirety for Timely Comics. The rest of the content of the issue (it's all black-and-white inside), consists of various humor and adventure features, some of which later saw newsstand publication. Fred Schwab drew the cover of this one and only issue. This is an appealing copy -- have a look at our scan and we think you'll agree. Overstreet 2006 VG 4.0 value = $7,700; FN 6.0 value = $11,000. CGC census 3/07: 1 in 5.0, 2 higher.

Shipping: Comics - Slabbed (certified) (view shipping information)
