In 1860, Abraham Lincoln gave Leonard W. Volk (1828-1895) sittings for a bust. The bust of Lincoln in marble was exhibited at the Paris Exposition, 1867, and copies were acquired by museums and historical societies. Offered here is an exceptional typed (with considerable manuscript additions and corrections) three page draft of a 1911 letter written by the artist's son Douglas Volk to J. Pierpont Morgan, art collector. Volk offers Morgan his father's artist's copy of this bust for $5000 together with the manuscript in the sculptor's own handwriting, describing the incidents of the Lincoln sittings. ( Lincoln found the process of letting wet plaster dry on his face, followed by a skin-stretching removal process, "anything but agreeable") Other works by Leonard Volk were: the Stephen A. Douglas monument at Chicago; the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument at Rochester, New York; and statues of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in the Illinois State Capitol at Springfield.
Included with the letter is a signed 1895 bank check by Leonard W. Volk.
