He became known in his native land for working on its most important sculpture, the Maternidad. While exhibiting in London he visited sculptor Henry Moore. He participated in the Third Sculpture Biennial in Japan and took the Kotaro Takamura prize. Settling in Mexico City, he went creating noteworthy sculptures until blindness ended his career. Today he is recognized throughout Latin America, and the rest of the world for his sculpture.
